Creative Winter Engagement Photos – How to Use Light

April 20, 2023

Looking for creative winter engagement photos? This artsy engagement session will give you inspiration on how to use light during the darker months! I love shooting at Guelph Lake Conservation Area, it’s one of my favourite places because it’s so different every single day. Sometimes thinking of shooting in the winter can be hard, but using the light to your advantage can create some beautiful, timeless art.

WINTER ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS – TIMING IS EVERYTHING

The first thing to think about when planning an engagement session in the winter time is timing. It’s important to think about when the sun sets to create beautiful images. I would recommend googling what time the sun sets on the day of your session and then photograph about an hour or so before. This artsy engagement session was in early January so we decided to shoot from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. We used the light coming through the pines in the forest to create silhouettes and sun flares.

USING LIGHT AND THINKING ABOUT LOCATION

Another thing to consider when planning your winter engagement session is location. Think about where the sun will be setting and what obstacles (trees, buildings, etc) will obscure that, or enhance it. The beauty about winter engagement sessions is that the light is typically more diffused from either the snow or the clouds.
